Mohammad Kaif Backs Rohit Sharma Amid IPL Criticism

Kaif Defends Rohit Sharma's Performance

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has once again expressed his support for Rohit Sharma, addressing ongoing discussions about the opener's performance and future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Kaif reflected on the frequent calls to bench Rohit and highlighted how the Mumbai Indians captain consistently silences his critics.

"For years, I've noticed that there are always people wanting to drop him. How often have we seen Rohit in a position where it seems like it could be his last match, only for him to come back and score 60 or 70 runs? Whenever he performs, he often becomes the Player of the Match due to his quick scoring," Kaif remarked.

Rohit has already secured three half-centuries in the current IPL season, proving to be a crucial player for the Mumbai Indians. Kaif emphasized that despite the significant pressure he faces annually, Rohit continues to rise to the occasion when it counts.

"This narrative repeats every year. The pressure on him is immense. It often feels like one more failure could lead to his exclusion, with cricket analysts scrutinizing him. He has three fifties in four matches, making a strong comeback that shows he should not be underestimated. He consistently responds with his bat," Kaif added.

Kaif also discussed the influence of Jasprit Bumrah within the Mumbai Indians' bowling lineup, describing him as a bowler whose presence disrupts the opposition's strategies. He used a famous movie reference to illustrate the intimidation Bumrah instills in batsmen.

"Mumbai Indians required Jasprit Bumrah between Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. The pressure he exerts is akin to a line from Sholay. Batters often say they should target the other bowlers before Bumrah arrives. This strategy allows Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and the spinners to take wickets. Bowlers surrounding Bumrah benefit because batsmen are hesitant to face him," Kaif explained.

Despite a rocky start to the tournament, the Mumbai Indians have bounced back, winning six consecutive matches and currently leading the IPL 2025 points table with seven victories out of eleven games. They are set to face the Gujarat Titans on May 6.
